ABOUT THE ARTIST

Sarah Surface-Evans is a Lansing-based artist and owner of Downy Tree Art.  Sarah has been painting her entire life, but decided to pursue her dream of being a professional artist in 2017.  Sarah’s two loves are watercolor and fiber art.  She combines these passions by designing fabric and embroidery patterns with her illustrations.  Sarah’s artwork has been featured at the Arts Council of Greater Lansing and other galleries in Michigan.  Her piece “Our Rights” was recently selected for the exhibit “The 19th Amendment at 100: Women's Voices Then and Now” at the Swords into Plowshares Peace Center and Gallery, Detroit, Michigan. Sarah’s installation, with friend and colleague Cortney McLean, “Water is Life” was featured in the 2019 Lansing ArtPath.

ABOUT DOWNY TREE ART

The values and commitment of Downy Tree Art center around two ideals.  First and foremost, create sustainable art. All my products are made by me - I use local sources and businesses for materials.  All my fabric is printed using sustainable practices.  My designer bags are sewn by me and embroidery kits are hand packed by me.  Second, support my community. My business started as a means to raise funds for the Lansing Women's Center and Refugee Development Center.  I have not forgotten those roots.  I donate a portion of my proceeds to local businesses and organizations that do good in our community.  Every purchase at downytreeart.com supports not only me, as a small business owner and artist, but also the mid-Michigan community.
