Wenlu Pei had the idea of creating artwork about the people of the Tibetan Plateau for many years. As a young boy, he was attracted by the Tibetan photographs published in journals. In recent years, he has visited Tibet four times, including Lhasa and Shangri-La in Yunnan Province and Ganzi in Sichuan Province. Traveling to these areas inspired him to focus on painting realistic portraits of how indigenous people lived, many of which are in this exhibition.
